Whatever the reason, we stand at a crossroads. And perhaps we're scared of the risks. Can I learn all that new stuff? Will I have the time or energy? Will I be good at it?
Do you know that inside of all of us is a universe of possibilities? Gifts we haven't thought about that we've never tried? Or gifts that we know we have that we've never had the time before to use? When God whispers that it's time to re-invent ourselves, the re-inventing is for us to grow, but also our changed self can positively affect others.
St. Paul tells us "there are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God Who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual, the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit." (1 Corinthians 12:4-7.)
Everything we do, every job, every service, every art and craft, because it's a gift given by the Holy Spirit, has a spiritual dimension, to positively impact our lives and the lives of all who are affected by what we do. I know men whose hobby is to make really good beer or ale, and they always bring out the latest beverage to share at a family party. I know women who knit and crochet lap robes, then give them out at nursing homes. A friend who is a pediatric N.P. takes care of her tiny patients by handing out donated books. Friends who paint or sculpt or make music derive great joy knowing their art will lift people's spirits, move their hearts.
So - pray for guidance and step out in courage every time you need to walk on a different path - or become truer to the Real Path within you. At the age of seventy, I pray for courage every time I sit down in front of the computer since I've re-invented myself to write a daily blog. And I ask the Holy Spirit to put the words in my mind and heart that will touch the people who read what I write.
St. Paul also says in 1 Corinthians, "strive eagerly for the greatest spiritual gifts": Faith. Hope. Love. Whatever we do, if we do it with faith, hope, love, and joy - we will feel a deep peace inside and bless everyone around us!
