Nothing makes us feel handsome, beautiful, or welcome in this world more than receiving the gaze of eyes brimming with love. Eyes that wrap us in a warm blanket of love that insulates us and protects us from the storms of life. Eyes that look at our physical flaws, and our personality flaws, and plunge deep down to love the reality of all that we are, our bodies, minds, and souls.
If we've never experienced such a loving gaze, or if that person dies or later abandons us, the wound to our souls can be almost fatal - unless and until we are loved like that again. Or - until we realize with faith that Someone always loves us, Someone is always gazing at us with a gaze of perfect love every minute of every day of our lives.
Regardless of whether we are loved or not by the people who surround us, there is Someone Who has loved us since before we were born, one Person Who actually chose us to be born, hand-picked us to be born before this world even existed! We may think that our existence was our parents' idea, or that we were an accident, or that our parents love our brother or sister more than they love us, so why did they bother to have us anyway. But God chose you and me to exist - to be created through the agency of Christ, to be favored children, to be adopted as God's precious, much-loved children:
"God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before Him. In love, He destined us for adoption to Himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of His Will." (Ephesians 1: 4 & 5.)
The Divine Truth is that God knew that a particular egg was going to be penetrated by a particular sperm and that the result would be you - because He wanted you. God knew what every one of your genes and your DNA would be and He knew just what you would look like and what your talents and your psychological quirks would be - and God wanted every part of you.
You and your life are of immense value to God. Why else would He choose for you to be here in this world? Why else would He pour His life into you to make you holy and blameless in His sight?
Maybe you feel useless because you have a chronic disease or you can't work any more. Maybe you've been an addict or been in jail. Maybe people have rejected you and been cruel to you and acted as if you're ugly because of the color of your skin or the fact that you use a wheelchair or that you're dyslexic. Or, maybe you can't understand why somebody rejected you and your heart is broken.
Just remember: God loves what you look like, how you talk, how you think. God chose you, just the way you are, to live for eternity. God believes in you and knows the burning beauty of your soul and all your gifts. God drenches you in healing love. And God knows how much holy love you are capable of giving to help heal the world - because God is constantly filling you with so much love that it can and will brim over like an exuberant fountain once you discover its power inside you.
If you can believe that God loves you so much, the next step is to believe that if you stay tuned to life, to everything going on around you, God will guide you to use your gifts and to find people whom you can love and who will love you in return. Because the Divine Plan is that the more you love others, the more love you will receive! The more you love others who are wounded, the more your inner wounds are healed.
If only you can believe you are totally loved by God, if only you can believe that God's love makes you lovable, if only you can risk giving love, there are so many people out there who are hungry for the love you can give them! Neighbors who are lonely and need visits. Infants in hospital nurseries who need to be cuddled and stroked. Old folks in nursing homes who like to have their cheeks kissed and their hands held. People who need donations of blood or organs. Food pantries that need strong backs and willing hands to distribute food to the hungry.
People will be so blessed even if all you can do is sit in your rocker and pray for them, because that prayer energy saves lives and saves souls. We are never useless! God works through us every minute of our lives - if we let Him.
Have faith that God chose you, hand-picked you, to live in this world. Have faith that God loves you, every part of you, inside and out. Have faith that God's eyes of love blanket you with love and protection always!
