What more beautiful words can we think about someone than "You see me"? When we know that someone really sees us, we know that we are loved and appreciated for who we are, with all our faults, idiosyncrasies, and limits - and unique gifts and personalities.
Aren't these the words that Christians have always used when they thought about and think about God? God sees us! Really sees us!
God the Creator saw the universe fresh and alive burst forth, and God saw that everyone and everything in it is good. God fore-saw each of us in our entireties and chose us, deciding to create each one of us as a unique being for God to love without limits as our Father.
God the Creator saw that human beings still did not understand who God is and continued to stray from the path God had laid out for us - and Jesus, true God and true Man, came to us in flesh and blood to look upon us with loving human eyes. Jesus saw - and sees - deep into our hearts and souls with eyes that call us to repent of our sins and change, to be willing to be guided by God, to feel confident and safe in His Presence. How can we be afraid of being seen by Jesus' eyes? His eyes that see us whole - and make us whole?
Then when Jesus left us to return to the Father, God did not want to leave us alone. Seeing us confused and bereft, Father and Son sent us the Holy Spirit, to remind us of everything Jesus said to us, to fill us with special gifts for ministry, to lift us up through the prophets who encourage us and challenge us.
We know God from the way God has acted in history, Whose story is told in Scripture. This is who God is - the real living God Who creates us, saves us, enspirits us! The life of God is ever-living, ever-giving love, a Being beyond human comprehension, but Who has acted in humans' lives in three distinct ways. God is a Community of Love!
Elizabeth A. Johnson explains it:
"In revelation, we experience that God is creator,...who is source of all, and in this light Christian tradition calls God 'Father.' But that is not all there is. God is God a second way, as self-uttering into time and space, becoming enfleshed in Jesus Christ to save, and now we call God the Word, Wisdom, or Son. But that is still not all. God is God a third time, continually gifting the world with gracious Divine Presence, sparking love, drawing all things towards the future, and now we call God Holy Spirit. It is all the one God, but we use a triple mode of address to signal the three-fold way God has self-communicated in history....the living God exists eternally in a three-fold distinction which corresponds to this history....
"To say that God is one is to negate division, thus affirming the unity of divine being: there is only one God. To say that the 'persons' are three is to negate solitariness, thus affirming that divine being dwells in living communion. The holy mystery of God is not a single monolith with a rigid nature, an undifferentiated whole, but a living fecundity of relational life that overflows to the world."
God, this mysterious Community of Love - sees us. God sees us as related - God is our Father and we are His children. God sees us from a mysterious distance and comes to visit us and save us in Jesus, who sees us for who we are and loves us for who we are. God kisses us with the Holy Spirit's gifts, holds our hand when we pray, feeds us as our Living Bread and slakes our thirst because He is our Living Water. God listens to our sometimes jumbled words, and hears our sobs, knows we are lost, and accepts us and forgives us, leading us back to a new, victorious future, all the while nodding at us and smiling.
Precious God, the joy and security of our lives is that You see us and love us for who we are - eternally!
