Just sit there. Listen for God. Just sitting and listening is prayer. If we believe in God, we often think that prayer is talking to God. So we keep talking as if He needs to learn what's going on from us. He already knows everything! It's fine to talk to God for awhile if it keeps us connected to God, and it helps us to vent, too. But sometimes we think that by talking to God, we're giving Him His marching orders. Nothing could be further from the Truth.
Just sit there. Quiet your mind gradually and focus on the Presence of the One Who is Mightier than all creation. You don't have to reach for Him! Focus on yourself surrounded by Him. Focus on Him living inside you, in the deepest part of you. He is nearer to you than your own breath. He has something to tell you. But you have to stop talking so you can hear Him.
Just sit there. Prepare yourself to listen to Someone other than your own voice. Permanent Deacon Robert Herrmann tells the story of a man whose only prayer was talking incessantly to - and at - God. So a Wise Man sent him to Niagara Falls where he could marvel at the Falls' awesome height and be silenced by their thunderous roar. "Take a long lingering look at Something Greater than yourself," said the Wise Man.
Just sit there, and if your mind is jumping from thought to thought like a monkey, just say the Holy Name, say "Jesus Lord" and let His Name bring you back to thinking of Him. "Jesus is honey in the mouth, melody in the heart....The Name is also a life-saving remedy. If any falls into sin or sadness, let him call on the Name of Jesus and immediately he will breathe the prayer of life." (Deacon Robert Herrmann.) Even if you have to say "Jesus" a hundred times to bring your straying mind back, that's a hundred prayers. If your heart becomes habituated to always saying "Jesus," you will be praying without ceasing.
Just sit there and let the eyes of your heart look into the eyes of God. You know that God knows everything about you, so maybe you feel naked as a jay bird. But that's all right. Adam and Eve walked naked in the Garden of Eden with God and felt no shame because they knew that they were totally loved. So are you! No one's eyes are full of as much love for you as God's eyes are. God's eyes are full of love for you whether you're a man or a woman; white, black, brown, red or yellow; rich, middle class or poor; a citizen or an illegal; straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender; clean or addicted. You are beautiful in His eyes. His eyes' loving gaze will make you MORE beautiful.
Just sit there. Ask God what He wants you to do - today, or tomorrow. And pay attention to the thoughts, memories, and feelings that suddenly surface in your heart. They're God's multifaceted ways of communicating with you - you personally.
Feelings of peace, that everything will be all right.
A rush of love bathing you and the unsaid words "You're good, and I love you..."
A vision of you saying or doing something, and it's the Wisdom Answer to your inner turmoil about what you should be saying or doing.
An ancient trauma surfaces, and you receive new healing and enlightenment.
You feel joy - God's letting you know that it's OK to experience joy, even when you're in mourning over the death of a loved one.
A burst of courage and stiffening of your spine prepares you to do what you now know you need to do.
You suddenly see yourself as if for the first time, and you know what you want to do with your life. God's shown you His vision of who you are.
A line of Scripture comes to mind when you most need it.
Just sit there, even if you feel you should be doing something. You are doing something! You're taking time to be comfortable with the One Who created you out of love, Who is always just waiting for you to open your heart to Him and say "Hello." When you sit with Him like this, your head is resting on His shoulder. His hand holds yours.
Be still and surrender to God's love for you, your love for Him. Wasting time with God deepens your trust in Him. It changes your prayer. Perhaps you used to only pray for yourself. Perhaps you used to mainly pray for others. All those prayers are good. But the best prayer is saying "I trust You, Jesus my Lord. I surrender to You. You know what's best."
Be still and open your mind and heart to God daily, and slowly you will discover that God does know what's best for you. You will trust Him to guide you and guide the ones you love. You will possess the true wisdom that comes from being still in the Presence of the Lord and waiting for Him to act.
