Some days it seems as if all you can do is put one foot in front of the other and keep going. Life is nothing but repetiiton. Get up. Get the kids off to school. Drive to work. Do the job. Come home. Take care of the kids. Work around the house. Get the kids to bed. Fall into bed. Get up. Do the same routine all over again. Some days it seems as if you're in a fog. Nothing seems too clear or too real. Sometimes even love doesn't seem too clear or too real. It would be so easy just to give up. Exhaustion saps all the energy that keeps you going. Why should you bother anyway? What difference does it make? Then you look at your husband or wife's profile, haloed by a lamp. Or the angelic face of your sleeping child. Or the smile on a co-worker's face, welcoming you to work. Or hear the person you've just helped sigh in relief because you just solved his problem. In a moment life and love are renewed. The fog is lifted. You see who you are and what your life means in perfect clarity. You realize that your life may be small and ordinary. But it is not insignificant. God counts on your daily, humble acts of love. Mother Teresa said "Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things for it is in them that your strength lies." | Our bodies may get tired. Our minds may get tired. But as long as our love doesn't get tired, we can keep on getting up out of bed and putting one foot in front of another. With a smile. A kiss. A joke. A kind word. A good deed going beyond what is required. Who renews our love when love grows tired? Knowing that we can't do it alone can cause us to ask God to do it for us and in us and through us. And then it happens. Love happens. Our inner strength is renewed and we rise on eagle's wings. |
